Kildwick Primary School finished runners-up in the finals of the 2013 Drax Cup.

The mixed team of under-nine boys and girls lost to Harehills (Leeds) 146-132 in a nail-biting match at Headingley Cricket Ground.

In the last two overs of the final, Kildwick’s bowlers did well to contain Harehills but couldn’t get the wickets they needed and the Leeds team finished with a six off the last ball.

For Harehills, it was a case of third time lucky after finishing as runners-up in the inaugural year of 2007 and 2008.

Kildwick won the closest match of the day, taking their semi-final 165-164 against Greenhill Primary from Sheffield, while Harehills reached the final with a seven-run win over Driffield Junior School (176-169).

A play-off for third and fourth place was won by Driffield over Greenhill 156-133.

The four teams took to the pitch prior to the Yorkshire Vikings v Leicestershire Foxes in the Friends Life t20.

The Drax Cup trophy and medals were presented by Yorkshire’s captain Andrew Gale and Yorkshire and England fast bowler Katherine Brunt, who are both ambassadors for the Drax Cup.

This year produced a record for the Drax Cup, with 440 schools from Yorkshire and Teesside competing in 32 regional events.
