Yorkshire Division Three: Baildon 27 Stocksbridge 14

THREE-QUARTERS of this match was played on the second-team pitch at Jenny Lane to allow an ambulance to attend Stocksbridge player Tom Spencer, who had suffered a potentially serious neck injury on the first-team pitch.

Fortunately, the only damage was of the soft tissue variety and, after a relatively short stay in hospital, Spencer, whose neck was stabilised on the pitch by players from both teams, was allowed home to be cared for by his partner.

Baildon, who kicked off with the wind at their backs, were put on the front foot by charges from Adam Hewitt, Guy Price, inspiring skipper Joe Robinson and Chris Peel before Spencer's injury.

With their set-piece working well, and several scrums being won against the head, Baildon's backs, led by classy fly half Nick Lister, played with confidence and ambition.

Hewitt put Baildon ahead with a try that Ollie Williams converted before the latter added a penalty.

Stocksbridge landed a penalty before half-time but Baildon made light of playing into a stiff breeze by adding a try by hooker Matt Dixon.

Two wind-assisted penalties kept the south Yorkshiremen in it at 15-9 but they lost a man to a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on with the try-line beckoning for Baildon.

The hosts then rubbed in their superiority when a sweetly-timed long pass by Williams put Zack Orrell over on the wing, and Harrison Strauss claimed the bonus-point try, which Williams also converted.

Next-to-bottom Stocksbridge claimed a consolation try at the death, but they are now only four points ahead of Baildon, who have two games in hand.
