Bradford & Bingley 7

Redruth 33

This National League Two game at Wagon Lane was effectively over by the 19th minute as the visitors from Cornwall steamed into a 21-point lead.

The home side looked like they had made the 380-mile trip and just stepped off the bus in the opening quarter as everything that Redruth did was a degree quicker and sharper.

But throughout the game the Redruth back-row looked yards sharper, and in Kiwi No 8 Mark Bright they had a player willing to get involved in all the scrapping for possession, but who also showed an alarming turn of pace and superb handling skills.

Bright's performance was capped off with a hat-trick of tries as he got over the whitewash in the 15th, 19th and 80th minutes.

There were chances for both sides in the opening ten minutes but with the first incisive break of the game, Redruth centre Gidlow opened the scoring.

There was more than a hint of a forward pass in the play that took the big centre over, and with Mike Hook slotting the extras it was 7-0 to the visitors after 11 minutes.

It appeared that this was just a minor setback for the Bees but with their next two possessions, Redruth romped through some poor defence to put themselves out of sight.

Their first score came as the ball was shipped rapidly from right to left and a yawning chasm appeared in the Bees rearguard, Gidlow galloping forward and having the easiest of passes to put Bright in under the posts.

He was back under the sticks three minutes later as he bounced off some ineffective Bees tackling to skip in unopposed.

As the sun dropped and the chill in the air increased, the first score of the second half was claimed by Hook as the Bees turned over a ball on the visitors' 22, the fly half haring 70 metres.

The Bees, who had shunned four or five kickable penalty opportunities, finally scored in the 72nd minute, No 8 Hese Fakatou burrowing over from close range and Tom Rhodes converting superbly, but Bright then got a fifth try.
