WITH the Yorkshire Division Four title in their back pocket, Wibsey’s attention turns back to the Yorkshire Vase tomorrow – and they have an intriguing quarter-final.

The Villagers, who went through the league season unbeaten, winning 12 and drawing two, host Yorkshire Division Three champions Wensleydale, who won 22, drew one and lost three of their 26 league matches.

Wibsey’s player-coach Andy Robinson, who it looks like will be starting at full back, said: “The Vase is one of our targets, especially after winning a couple of rounds.

“It will be a big test because Wensleydale are Yorkshire Division Three champions but the lads are up for it and we are looking forward to it.”

Inevitably as it is Easter Saturday, neither side will be quite at full strength, and Wibsey are missing prop Simon Birkbeck and scrum half Kyle Carter and will probably switch lock Elliott Cousins to fly half.

If that seems an outlandish choice, Robinson said: “I have seen him play there a couple of times for Bradford Dudley Hill.”

Meanwhile, Bradford Salem have conceded their Yorkshire Shield quarter-final at fellow Yorkshire Division One side Middlesbrough.

Salem chairman Neil Klenk was berating clubs for blobbing in Yorkshire knockout competitions earlier this season, but explained in an e-mail to the Yorkshire RFU’s competitions committee: “We reluctantly agree to give Middlesbrough a walkover in the Yorkshire Shield quarter-final.

“The decision to withdraw has not been taken lightly as we always have and always will value the Yorkshire cup competitions.

“However, as you know, we have tried to make the trip to Middlesbrough on two previous occasions, and the coaches for these aborted journeys alone have cost the club £470.

“Consequently the prospect of making a third journey on Easter Saturday is not really feasible, especially bearing in mind that we have a major injury crisis at the moment.

“I hope that you can understand our decision and that we will be accepted into the competition next season.”
