Old Grovians 25 Old Modernians 25

Having suffered defeat on the last play of the game in controversial circumstances when the sides met earlier in the season, this time it was Old Grovians who snatched the result from Old Modernians.

The visitors took the lead with a try but the hosts’ reply was instant as Adam Weaving converted a penalty before debutant Joe McGechaen burst through the line to touch down.

On the stroke of half-time, Old Grovians opened up a ten-point lead as Anthony Griffin (pictured) outpaced the defence from halfway to cross the line.

Old Modernians reduced the deficit to 15-10 following a catch and drive but Grovians extended their lead as winger Aaron Magee danced his way around several defenders to score.

However, a penalty and try saw the home side’s lead eroded to 22-18.

Grovians forward Pat Guthrie was sent to the sin bin for persistent offending and the game looked up when a penalty try saw Modernians go 25-22 up with just two minutes to go.

The hosts were reduced to 13 when Dave Roberts received a yellow card but this galvanised Old Grovians.

After a burst from Griffin, Old Modernians were stretched and their lock forward killed the ball in front of his own posts.

The resulting yellow card came as Grovians scored the straight forward penalty to earn a draw.
