Prudhoe & Stocksfield 10, Baildon 18

(after extra time)

Baildon had to overcome adversity to progress to the knockout stages of the RFU Junior Vase.

Having had their offer to play the tie over two legs refused following the withdrawal of Newton Aycliffe, the Jenny Laners had to make the 200-mile round trip through near blizzard conditions to Northumbria outpost Stocksfield to decide who would go through to the quarter-finals.

Fortunately, the heavy snow had not quite reached Stocksfield by kick-off time but the heavy conditions suited the home side's heavier forwards who, despite playing up a pronounced slope in the first half, pinned Baildon in their own half for long periods.

Baildon's line was breached with a try that should have been disallowed when the home side's flanker picked up from an offside position to cross for a converted try on 13 minutes.

It was the only score of the first half, although Pete Lowth touched down on 33 minutes, only for the referee to disallow the score, stating that the prop had been held up over the line.

Fly half Jake Duxbury reduced the deficit with a well-struck penalty three minutes from the restart but the home side hit back almost immediately with a penalty of their own to restore their seven-point advantage.

The Jenny Laners' grip on the trophy looked to be loosening but, showing great character and commitment, the holders dug deep and toiled their way through the phases up the steep incline to eventually give hooker Dale Tabiner the chance to cross the whitewash.

The youngster took the opportunity superbly by accepting a short pass from scrum half Joe Miller to pick a great line through the Stocksfield defence and crash over on 53 minutes, Duxbury converting to level the scores at 10-10.

Once again Baildon's superior fitness began to tell and, despite pressing hard for the remainder of normal time, the Jenny Laners couldn't manufacture a score to carry them through.

With the scores level after 80 minutes, the game went into extra time and it took a moment of magic to unlock the home defence when Duxbury sold a midfield dummy then chipped over the advancing full back to score an excellent individual try seven minutes into the first period of extra time.

The fly half just failed to improve his fine try with the conversion but put the game beyond doubt with a superbly-struck long-range penalty in the second period of extra time to put his side through to face Manchester Medics in the last eight.
