Manchester 13 Wharfedale 22

For Wharfedale, this was a National League Two game of different halves - and they performed superbly in each.

Having threatened to run away with the match before the interval, scoring three fine tries and going close on several other occasions, the Greens spent virtually all the second half engaged in spendidly resolute defence.

Manchester, who barely seemed competitive in the first period, were transformed after the break.

A penalty in the 43rd minute by Gareth Wynne took them within a score.

With possession to spare, they pounded at the visitors' defence. But repeated attacks crashed against an unyielding Green Wall'.

There was no further movement on the scoreboard until the 70th minute.

And then the Greens stunned their hosts with a breakaway that resulted in flanker Hedley Verity's second driven line-out try of the game. Replacement lock John Eberor managed a consolation score for Manchester five minutes later (again, a driven line-out), but the Dalesmen were not to be denied the well-earned fruits of their labours, made all the sweeter by the four-try bonus.

Verity's first try came after seven minutes, and though home lock Gareth Rawlings snatched an equaliser two minutes later - pouncing on a charged-down clearance attempt by Andy Baggett - the Greens' general control of matters was hardly disturbed.

Winger James Hutchinson was sent away to the corner by a slick pass from Chris Malherbe on the quarter-hour, and the centre showed his considerable pace and strength in bursting through for his own try on 25 minutes.

It only seemed a matter of time before the match was put out of Manchester's reach such was the Dalesmen's dominance.

But the second half was a different story.
