QUEENSBURY lost out to Premier Division rivals West Hull as they were defeated 20-8 at home in a pulsating Yorkshire Men's League encounter at a rain swept Albert Road Recreational Ground.

Bury met a very well drilled, well organised outfit who had just that little too much firepower for them to deal with.

The hosts came close to opening the scoring on the ten-minute mark when hooker Robson Moore drove to the posts only to be held up by a number of West Hull tacklers.

It was then the turn of opposing hooker Kieron Sewell to be held up when he looked certain to score.

West Hull weren't to be denied though and, when the Bury defence made the most fatal of errors in letting the ball bounce from a high kick, impressive stand-off Tom Burke pounced.

He found Elliot Jones in support who in turn gave centre Reece Gooch a clear run to the line. Lewis Colrein added the extras to give the visitors a crucial early 6-0 lead.

Minutes later Bury had centre Dave Greenwood to thank for not falling further behind when he pulled off a try-saving tackle out wide on their left flank.

The Bradford side finished the half the stronger and were rewarded for their efforts with a try when Moore's pass found Greenwood, who somehow spun in the tackle and put the ball down as he fell backwards over the line.

Ethan Eggerton Sharp was off target with the conversion from a difficult angle.

With half-time looming, Moore made a lovely break up the middle but a lack of support left him at the mercy of the West Hull full back.

Playing up the slope in the second half Bury soon found themselves up against it when they suffered a ten-minute three-try blitz.

First, Burke made the home side pay for another mistake when he seized the ball and sold a clever dummy before diving over.

Another knock-on then allowed Burke to collect again who, from just a few yards out, made no mistake in getting the ball down.

With Bury still reeling, Sewell then burst up the middle, leaving a number of would-be tacklers in his wake, and found the supporting Gooch who crossed out wide.

Colrein was only able to add the final conversion but West Hull were looking comfortable with a 20-4 advantage.

Bury refused to throw in the towel, with Matty Piper and Joe Flanagan working tirelessly in defence.

Tempers became frayed just after the hour mark and, following a clash between Bury's Aaron Moore and West Hull's Sewell, both were dispatched to the sin bin.

Things got out of hand again with punches being thrown and, after a lengthy stoppage, Burke joined Sewell in the sin bin.

Bury quickly took advantage of the extra man when loose forward Chris Rafferty crashed over for an unconverted try. However there was no time for a comeback as cheers from the opposition touchline rang out at the sound of the final whistle.

Bury coach Alan Redmonds will be looking for a big response when they take on Cutsyke Raiders this week but will hopefully be able to call on a number of key players who were unavailable against West Hull.
