QUEENSBURY welcomed Nottingham Outlaws to the annual Martin Potts Day clash and claimed a 32-28 victory to go second in the Yorkshire Men's League Premier Division.

The first 10 minutes were all Bury, as first Dan Charlton was put through via a defence-cutting pass from Billy Naylor to score in the corner, and secondly Callum Murgatroyd crossed to give the hosts a 10-0 lead.

If Bury thought it would be a walk in the park after their 30-point victory in Nottingham, they were mistaken.

The visitors came back into the game following a number of errors from the hosts in the blustery conditions and, after 22 minutes, they took the lead with two well-taken converted tries.

A further score by captain Murgatroyd was matched by yet another Nottingham score, punishing Bury errors to regain the lead.

It stayed the same going into the break and early in the second half.

Solid defence from both teams on the narrow pitch kept scoring down but, after 52 minutes, a driving set by Bury was finished by Tom Hainsworth as he twisted over the line to dot down under the posts. It was again converted by the trusty boot of Scott Swann.

But the Outlaws hit back and went over the whitewash for an unconverted try to level the scores at 22-22 and the tension grew.

Naylor's excellent effort on 62 minutes was matched by Nottingham as both sides scored converted tries again, until Hainsworth managed to touch down in the corner in a scrambled end to a set to give the hosts a four-point cushion.

Bury held out for the last eight minutes against a determined Nottingham side, who were buoyed by the previous week's victory over Siddal.

Man of the match was awarded to Hainsworth for his driving runs and brace of tries, although there were lots of good individual performances.

Queensbury host third-placed West Hull on Saturday in what will be a stern test of their play-off credentials.
