Wyke got off to a flier in Yorkshire Men's League Division Two with a 48-4 victory at Stanningley.

Despite a number of absentees, they started the game in control and stand-in stand-off Bradley Clarkson set up tries for Alec Williams and James Waine.

When scrum half Jordan Payton dropped his shoulder to score, the writing seemed to be on the wall for the Leeds outfit.

However, the large Stanningley pack rallied and, after defending four consecutive sets, Wyke finally got the ball back, only for loose forward James Cullen to throw a wide pass that was intercepted as the hosts reduced the deficit to 14-4 at half-time.

Straight from the restart Cullen made amends for his earlier blunder when he went through a hole in the Stanningley defence and eventually, after some neat work from Sam Kittsen, Calvin Barker crossed.

Wyke again hit their straps with Kittsen, Payton and Clarkson combining well to send Williams over for his brace.

Next came the solo try of the game when former Stanningley winger Cameron Foster broke to go the length of the field and step a would-be defender to put the ball down between the uprights.

Wyke's front row proved to be far too strong as the impressive Jonny Fawthrop scored from another Cullen break.

Then Ryan Kershaw crossed on his return from two serious shoulder injuries.

Super sub Kittsen capped a fine personal performance with a dive over from acting half to complete the try-scoring.

Clarkson kicked five goals and Williams one.

The impressive Oscar Woodhead was named man of the match, closely followed by Clarkson and Charles Grocock, who was part of a very strong front row alongside Jordan Myers and Luke Robinson.

Meanwhile, Wyke Academy played their first game under the leadership of Cameron Scott and Ryan White as they fell to a 24-4 defeat against Dodworth in a pre-season friendly, young hooker Callum Scott touching down for the black and whites.

Wyke host Stainland on Saturday while the academy go to Garforth in a friendly.
