Queensbury 54 Westgate Wolves 12

Full back Luke Brearcliffe posted four tries to keep Queensbury’s Pennine League Division One promotion ambitions on course against Westgate Wolves at Hill Top.

Bury, who entered the match knowing they had to win their remaining four fixtures to regain Premier Division status, set about their task with gusto and when the visitors were penalised for a punch in the tackle, prop forward Brett Marriott collected the tap-and-run to cross.

He added his first conversion in an 18-point tally before the Wolves got back on level terms with a converted effort of their own.

When Westgate lost the services of loose forward Dave Hirst to the sin bin, Bury took full advantage to cut loose with further touchdowns from second row forward Joe Langford, stand-off Ben Marks, wingman Ben Naylor and a first from Brearcliffe to go into the sheds 32-6 up.

The Wakefield side, who had started the game sitting in second spot, now needed a miracle to get back into contention but their hopes were dashed when Bury hoisted a high kick-off, leaving centre Sam Poole to out jump allcomers and sprint to the line.

Langford picked up from the base of the scrum to roar in from 80 metres and it was now a case of how many.

The Wolves briefly delayed their humiliation by claiming a converted try from Carl Riley but it was his opposite number Brearcliffe who showed once again he is a top performer when the chips are down with a sparkling second-half hat-trick that prompted the referee to end the mayhem and blow up ten minutes early.
