CAMPION made an inconsistent start to the Northern Counties East League Premier Division season, but manager Lee Ashforth has them firing on all cylinders now.

They were outstanding on Saturday, moving to within four points of the play-offs with a sensational 7-1 away win at second-placed Handsworth.

They had already put their hosts out of sight by half-time, Ben Grech-Brooksbank, Aidan Day and Paddy Sykes all scoring to put the Bradford side 3-0 up.

Ewan Gregson put Campion 4-0 up early in the second half, before Ify Ofoegbu pulled a goal back for Handsworth.

But that only seemed to inspire the visitors to greater heights, as Gregson, Sykes and Day all completed their braces in the final 20 minutes to seal a 7-1 victory.

Thackley also enjoyed a great day on the road, moving into 12th with a 3-1 win at Knaresborough Town, a result that took them above their hosts.

The Bradford side fell behind to a Jack Dyche goal on 36 minutes, but Toby Marriott’s quick response ensured the two sides went into the interval on level terms.

There was a long delay in the second half due to a nasty clash of heads between Dyche and new Thackley signing James Knowles, with the visitors responding better after the resumption.

Late goals from Alex Washington and Luke Brooks ultimately got the job done for the Dennyboys in North Yorkshire.

Liversedge also won on their travels, as they continued their stroll to the title.

Two early goals from Kelan Swales got the job done, as they beat Wombwell Town 2-0.

Conversely, Albion Sports and Eccleshill both slid to defeat on home soil.

Albion are now three points adrift in the relegation zone, two goals in second-half stoppage-time unable to rescue them from defeat.

They had gone 1-0 up through Mo Qasim, but four goals in a 25-minute spell either side of half-time put visiting Barton Town in cruise control.

Niall Heaton and Nathan Cartman scored at the death, but it was not enough, as Albion lost 4-3.

Eccleshill started brightly against Parkgate, having a goal ruled out for offside, but they faded as the game wore on, the visitors ultimately coming away with a 2-0 win.

Route One Rovers’ NCEL Division One game at Doncaster City was called off due to emergency drainage work being required on the home side’s pitch.

Steeton were not in action in the North West Counties Football League First Division North, but their neighbours Silsden did play.

They produced a superb late fightback to draw 2-2 at play-off chasing North Ferriby, Jake Cassidy and Isaac Robinson scoring in the final 10 minutes.

The result puts Silsden three points clear of the Northern Premier League East Division relegation zone.

The Cobbydalers now sit 14th, with Brighouse just above them in 13th after their 3-2 home defeat against Grimsby Borough.

Finally, Guiseley lost for the first time under new manager Ian Richards.

They were outplayed in their Northern Premier League East Division clash at fellow strugglers Prescot Cables and lost 2-0.

The defeat leaves the Lions just four points clear of the relegation zone.
