THERE has not been much luck for two of our Bradford sides in midweek, both of whom had games called off for very different reasons.

Route One Rovers have been forced to postpone their home game in Division One of the Northern Counties East League with Worsbrough Bridge Athletic due to pitch damage.

The game should have taken place tonight at Myra Shay, but the surface was vandalised last week on Bonfire Night.

Atif Iqbal, who does lots of good charity and community work in Bradford, posted a video showing the damage, with a large section of the pitch scorched and blackened.

It is a causing a real headache for Albion and Route One, who both play home games there.

Albion were forced to move their FA Vase tie to Brighouse Town last weekend as a result, which they won at least, beating visiting Holker Old Boys 3-2 in a thriller.

But only 38 supporters attended the game, a clear sign Albion need to be back home, but they will have to wait, their game against Frickley Athletic at Myra Shay this Saturday having already been postponed.

There was a much more innocent reason for Campion’s NCEL Premier Division game at Knaresborough Town being called off last night.

It was an extremely wet day across the county, but particularly in North Yorkshire, with Knaresborough forced into a postponement due to a waterlogged pitch.

The referee came to the decision just after 1pm yesterday, with standing water already on the pitch by lunchtime, with further rain to come during the afternoon.

It was clear the surface was going to be unplayable, so an early call was made to avoid Campion having to travel up from Bradford for the fixture.

Campion and Knaresborough have already faced off this season, the latter winning the pair’s West Riding County Cup first-round tie 2-1 at Scotchman Road.

And there was a dramatic second-round fixture in that competition last night, which made the decision to call things off at Knaresborough early yesterday look like a shrewd move.

Fifteen miles down the road, Tadcaster Albion entertained Wakefield AFC, with the hosts looking set for a quarter-final berth having moved into a 4-2 lead

But with just 12 minutes of the game to go, the rain finally became too much, with the referee forced to abandon the match.

The below pictures, which show Tadcaster’s fourth goal just before the early finish, give a good indication as to why the officials made that call.

Liversedge avoided all the wet weather drama last night though, stretching their lead at top of the NCEL Premier Division to six points with a thumping 5-0 home win over Parkgate.

Ryan Watson, Alex Wollerton, Kelan Swales and George Green all found the net, but Joe Walton’s goal was extra special, as it was his 200th for the club, who he has served with great distinction over the past decade.

In an amazing full circle moment, Walton’s very first goal for Sedge 10 years ago also came against Parkgate.
