BRIGHOUSE Town Women have formed their own women's team, led by club legend Cara Mahoney.
The team formerly known as Brighouse Town Women split from the club a few months ago, but continued to play under that name in the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division until the end of the season.
They will remain in that division next season, but only after rebranding themselves as Halifax FC Women.
As Halifax FC's first-team manager Rob Mitchell explained yesterday, that gave Brighouse the chance to set up their own women's team, which is what they promptly have done.
On their official website, Brighouse confirmed they had brought Cara Mahoney in as player-manager for the club’s newly formed women’s section.
She is tasked with bringing back women’s open-age first-team football to Brighouse Town AFC.
Joint-chairmen, Chris Lister and James Howard, expressed their delight at the news that Brighouse now had a women’s team fully integrated into the football club and that Mahoney had agreed to take control of this.
She played for the club for seven seasons before joining Altofts and is excited to build a section to include Under-18s, U23s and open age teams, to ensure all who wish to play football at Brighouse Town can do so in a positive, nurturing environment that will be built on team values of trust, transparency, and togetherness.
She told the club website: “It’s great to be back with Brighouse Town again.
“They are a special community club close to my heart that has developed a thriving girls’ junior set-up, with an ethos of kids being coached and developed to enjoy playing passing football.
“I’m excited by the prospect of coaching and playing football with these young girls who are the future of our club.
“It’s also fabulous to have the backing of local businesses such as CP Media and JTD, whose backing means we are in good shape even before we kicking off the new 2023/24 season.”
The club will be holding trials over the summer as they continue to recruit and build the team.
