CAMPION'S little wobble at the summit of the Northern Counties East League Division One table continued last night.

The Bradford side almost pulled off a brilliant second-half comeback at Wakefield AFC, but ultimately paid for a disastrous first 45 minutes, going down to a 3-2 defeat.

Even worse, nearest rivals Harrogate Railway Athletic crushed Dronfield Town 4-1 to move just six points behind the Red and Blacks, having played a game less too.

Campion had only won one of their previous three league games going into last night, and they could not have got off to a worse start at their West Yorkshire rivals, with Lewis Stephens netting inside the first 10 minutes.

That came after a breathless opening which saw Wakefield's Jake Morrison denied by a goalline clearance and Campion's Marcus Day firing a great chance wide.

The Red and Blacks missed two brilliant opportunities at 1-0 down, Mark Ferguson blasting over from close range and home keeper Harry Kendrick producing a stunning save.

The visitors paid for their profligacy when Mason Rubie put Wakefield 2-0 up just before the half-hour mark, before a fine finish from Kieran Cessay extended the home side's lead five minutes before the break.

Campion brought on Ash Flynn, Steve Crawford and Kieran Suddards for Robbie Graham, Joe Colley and Mark Ferguson ahead of the second half, and the shake-up paid dividends, as Patrick Sykes netted almost immediately to reduce the deficit.

Michael O'Brien netted the visitors' second after 85 minutes, but James Bicknell and Lee Ashforth's side were unable to find a last-gasp equaliser.

Only the league winners will be promoted to the NCEL Premier Division automatically, with second to fifth involved in the end-of-season play-offs.

Up in the NCEL Premier Division, Eccleshill United suffered another disappointing defeat in a miserable league season.

They were a penalty shootout away from promotion last term, but after a squad revamp, they sit 16th, though comfortably clear of the relegation places.

They lost 2-1 last night at high-flying Emley AFC, having conceded twice in the opening half-hour.

The prolific Iyrwah Gooden opened the scoring for the hosts, before Jack Cairney put the ball through his own net.

Louis Fialdini halved the deficit five minutes into the second half, but Ryan Toulson's side were unable to find an equaliser.

Steeton have a slim chance of making the North West Counties Football League First Division North play-offs still, and they romped to a 3-0 win at rock-bottom Cleator Moor Celtic last night.

The long trip to Cumbria was worthwhile for the Chevrons, with James Hobden netting twice, either side of an Owen O'Neill own goal.

James Catlow saved Thomas Houghton's penalty too to deny Cleator Moor even a consolation goal.

Liversedge suffered a costly last-gasp home defeat to promotion-chasing Bamber Bridge last night.

Paul Dawson opened the scoring for the visitors, but Jack Carr equalised almost instantly.

Fin Sinclair-Smith settled the game with a 90th minute winner for Bridge though, leaving Sedge eight points from safety, but with games in hand still on the teams above them.

Finally, Farsley Celtic dropped below Bradford (Park Avenue) and down to second-bottom after losing 3-1 at new National League North leaders AFC Fylde.

Siyabonga Ligendza and Connor Barrett put the hosts 2-0 up after 24 minutes, but Tom Allan headed home a Bobby Johnson corner to halve the deficit just past the half-hour mark.

Will Hatfield scored seconds before half-time to put Fylde 3-1 up, and the visitors were unable to muster a response after the break.

Farsley and Avenue are both on 34 points, two points from safety at present.
