IT WAS a pretty miserable weekend for our non-league clubs, with frozen pitches, fog and dismal defeats all contributing factors.

Eccleshill United's home game against Bottesford and Silsden's at Sherwood Colliery were both frozen off, and with Albion Sports not scheduled to play anyway, it was left to Thackley to fly the flag for the Bradford District in the NCEL Premier Division.

They could not have made a better start at rock-bottom Athersley Recreation, with Ben Grech-Brooksbank, on his return from injury, crashing a long-range effort low past the keeper and into the net after just two minutes.

It got worse for Athersley after a quarter of an hour, when Joshua Berry was dismissed for a professional foul on Thackley's Lewis Waddington.

Will Jackson and Waddington both went close for the visitors, with the latter sliding a shot just wide when through on the keeper, but Athersley also fired a good chance just off target.

The fog descended for the second half, but that did not stop Thackley, with Thomas Rose and Chris Lever both having shots saved by Ellis Pickard.

Pickard was in inspired form, making stunning stops to deny Grech-Brooksbank and Waddington from doubling the lead.

Athersley were looking dangerous on the break, but it was the Dennyboys who were creating the clearcut chances, with Grech-Brooksbank denied once more by Pickard.

But on 65 minutes, with the fog worsening, the referee called a halt to proceedings.

He waited 20 minutes to see if the conditions cleared up, but with that not happening, the game was called off, and will now have to be re-arranged.

Over in the NWCFL First Division North, Campion were probably left wishing their game had been postponed, as they slid to a 2-0 home defeat against fellow mid-table side Chadderton.

Cory Knight opened the scoring for the visitors just before the half-hour mark, and Arron Scholes added a late second.

In the same division, Steeton were drawing 0-0 at high-flying West Yorkshire rivals Golcar United just before the break

But Dan Naidole's fine finish gave the hosts the lead on 42 minutes and Ash Flynn had put them 2-0 up by the hour mark.

Though Kayle Price pulled one back for Steeton, a late third from Golcar's Buddy Cox put the game to bed.

Liversedge were the one bright spot, and they stayed seven points clear at the summit of the NPL East Division after winning 2-0 at home to Hebburn Town.

Gav Allott put them in front a minute before the break, before Lewis Whitham got their second on 49 minutes.

Brighouse Town's game in that division at Stocksbridge Park Steels was called off due to a frozen pitch, as was Guiseley's FA Trophy game at Stourbridge.

The latter will now be played tonight instead, with the winner to host Solihull Moors in the fifth round, meaning Guiseley’s West Riding County Cup quarter-final at Albion, which was also scheduled for this evening, will have to be rearranged.
