Cleckheaton could be the backdrop tonight for the debut of a man who Yorkshire hope can provide their missing link in Twenty20 cricket.

South African batsman David Miller, signed last week as their second overseas player, flew into England yesterday ahead of his second spell in county cricket.

A debut may come in tonight’s warm-up match against the Bradford League outfit ahead of Friday’s North Division opener against Durham, the 23-year-old left-hander’s former employers.

Yorkshire have struggled down the years for an explosive striker of the ball who can win a game in a flash, which is something Miller is capable of.

Gary Ballance also looks capable of such feats after developing as a player over the last 12 months but Jonny Bairstow is set to be missing due to his selection for England’s limited overs commitments against West Indies and Australia.

Miller’s strike rate of 125.64 is bettered only by Phil Jaques and Adam Lyth in Yorkshire’s squad.

And first-team coach Jason Gillespie said: “David gives it a whack and can clear the ropes, which we felt was something we could utilise.

“He’s a great lad who will fit into our dressing room very well. His work ethic is top notch. He fits the bill for us perfectly and it’s very exciting that he’s agreed to come and play for Yorkshire.”

Yorkshire, who were practising at Scarborough yesterday, are in confident mood ahead of the ten-game North Division campaign.

Gillespie added: “We’ve put together a strong squad which covers all bases, one that we believe can do a really good job and make a strong challenge.

“It basically comes down to the belief of the players and nailing our game-plans. When we do that, we’ll put ourselves into positions to win games of cricket.”
