Holders Burley are through to the second round of the Waddilove Cup after coming out on top in a tense finish against Guiseley.

David Brook (60) gave Burley a good start in the Aire-Wharfe League knockout competition but they then slumped from 48-1 to 115-7 on the way to being bowled out for 153, with Dave Pennett (4-44) and Abid Awan (3-16) doing most of the damage.

Pennett hit a half-century to put Guiseley on the way to 140-7 but they then lost two quick wickets and with Robert Atkinson having to leave early for family reasons, they were left with no number 11 and fell five runs short of victory.

There was an intriguing tie between Steeton and Rawdon, who passed on the promotion-relegation stairs last season and have started the campaign heading their divisions.

Neil Spragg (87) and David Wildsmith (55) helped Steeton to 200-5 and with Spragg (4-31) and Paul Hardwick (3-33) keeping things tight, Rawdon were dismissed for 184 despite the efforts of Joe Loohram (56) and Andrew Doidge (41).

Phil Atkinson (96no) and Michael Slater (4-41) were the heroes as Green Lane (229-6) comfortably won what might have been a tricky tie by 66 runs at Bardsey, while a century from Alex Baily (122) and 5-19 spell by Nick Cockcroft saw Ilkley (223-7) knock out Woodhouse by 110 runs.

Ben Rhydding raced to 285-3 thanks to an unbeaten 104 from Robbie Oldham, backed up by Jason Wright (66no), Robbie Miller (54) and Lewis Bolton (49), as they eased home by 104 runs at New Rover, and half-centuries from Scott Driscoll and Ben Waller were the backbone of Calverley’s 77-run win over Horsforth.

Chasing Alwoodley’s 175-7, Silsden clinched a seven-wicket verdict thanks to Simon Cox (79no) and Majid Inayat (47).

Yaser Ali led the way with a half-century in Thackley’s 178-8 and older brother Mahir (3-21) finished the job to knock out Division Three pace-setters Colton by 52 runs.

Stewart Smith (86no) and Andrew Ross (70no) took Otley to 235-4 but it was not quite enough to beat in-form Kirkstall, who won by six wickets.

Addingham found the gap in class too great to overcome against Collingham, for whom Brian Leigh hit 164 in a 108-run win, and Bolton Villas went down by nine wickets at Beckwithshaw.

Hamish Skelt scored 39 in Olicanian’s 153-5 but for the second day running they came out second best against seven-wicket winners North Leeds, while a battling 68 from Gareth Lee could not save Menston as they lost by eight wickets to Adel. And Skipton went down by five wickets to Follifoot despite the efforts of Zarshad Khan, who hit 31 of their 126.
