Mitchell Starc claimed three wickets on his Yorkshire debut as his new county fought back to stifle Derbyshire’s batsmen during the first half of their Clydesdale Bank 40 match at Headingley.

The Australian left-arm fast bowler was the pick of the White Rose attack with 3-28 from his eight overs as the Falcons posted 219-8 after being inserted by Andrew Gale.

Anthony McGrath also claimed 2-24 from his six overs as the visitors slumped from 154-1 halfway through the 28th over.

New Zealand opener Martin Guptill top-scored with 89 off 83 balls, including five sixes, as he shared 137 for the first wicket with Chesney Hughes, who made 50.

Yorkshire were staring down the barrel, but Derbyshire imploded in the face of some tight bowling from McGrath and then Starc at the end.

New-ball bowler Starc had Ross Whiteley caught at deep extra cover by Adam Lyth and Dan Redfern caught behind by Gerard Brophy before bowling Tom Poynton in his second spell.

The wicket of Whiteley came in the middle of a wicket maiden, his sixth over of the innings.
