Jonny Bairstow’s stunning start to his international career hit a new high today with a blistering unbeaten century in England’s final one-day warm-up win over a Hyderabad Cricket Association XI.

The 22-year-old Yorkshire wicketkeeper, playing as a specialist batsman, smashed six fours and eight sixes in his 53-ball 104, boosting the visitors’ total to 367-4.

The home side were then bowled out for just 114 inside 36 overs, going down by 253 runs.

Having only arrived at the crease in the 32nd over following 85 for Alastair Cook and 71 for Craig Kieswetter, Bairstow reached three figures by clearing the ropes with the last ball of the innings.

He shared 143 inside 16 overs for the fourth wicket with Jonathan Trott, who added 74, on a pitch that was marginally quicker than the same one used for Saturday’s first warm-up match.

And Bradford-born Bairstow must now be a shoo-in for Friday’s first one-day international against India at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Ghandi Stadium.

“It’s a further indication that he’s taken to international cricket like a duck to water,” said Yorkshire’s director of professional cricket Martyn Moxon.

“To get 100 off 50 balls is quite a remarkable achievement.

“When there’s no pace on the ball, it can be especially hard but timing and the ability to hit the ball over the ropes is one of his major assets. He seems to have perfected that during this knock.”

Bairstow’s innings comes on the back of his debut 41 not out off just 21 balls against the Indians at Cardiff last month.

Despite an opening partnership of 69 between Akshath Reddy and Dwaraka Ravi Teja, the hosts never looked like chasing down the runs.

Durham leg-spinner Scott Borthwick, deputising for Graeme Swann, finished with 5-31 from ten overs, including the wickets of Reddy, Ravi Teja and Hanuman Vihari in the space of seven balls.

Surrey fast bowler Stuart Meaker claimed three wickets in the 29th over to reduce Hyderabad from 97-6 to 98-9.

He trapped wicketkeeper Ibrahim Khaleel lbw before bowling Ashish Reddy for a golden duck. He also bowled Amol Shinde with the last ball of the over.

Bairstow’s Yorkshire team-mate Tim Bresnan bowled four wicketless overs at a cost of 15 runs.

Bairstow’s performance now gives the England management team a selection headache, with Ian Bell and Ravi Bopara both missing today’s match.
