Abject batting by the top half of the order sent Yorkshire crashing to defeat by 93 runs against Warwickshire in the final of the Second XI Trophy at Headingley yesterday.

A good-sized crowd turned up to see if much-needed silverware could be added to the club's display cabinet but they left disappointed and pondering over the future of two of Yorkshire's capped players.

Opener Matthew Wood was out to the second ball of the innings and former England off-spinner Richard Dawson conceded 57 runs without claiming a wicket and was then quickly dismissed.

Yorkshire needed a good start if they were to get close to Warwickshire's formidable 326 but the first over from Naqaash Tahir cost them two wickets before a run had been scored, Wood edging to wicketkeeper Michael Barnes and Adam Lyth giving a low catch to Jamie Troughton at point.

It became 25 for four in five overs as Andrew Gale and Richard Pyrah both got caught behind and there was no chance of a recovery once Dawson was bowled by Taquir.

Captain Simon Guy and David Wainwright averted a complete disaster with a stand of 93 which ended when Guy gave a boundary catch for 64, but Wainwright applied himself to remain unbeaten on 70 from 88 balls.

Winning the toss, Warwick-shire gave Yorkshire a lesson on how to build a big innings as Navdeep Poonia and Moeen Ali aggressively but safely put on 118 for the first wicket before Ali fell lbw to pace prospect Greg Norton for 63.

Poonia stayed in control while striking 101 from 96 deliveries and Troughton also made a significant contribution with a 78-ball 80.

Warwickshire were 269 for three in the 41st over when Troughton was bowled by Mark Lawson, the last eight wickets going down for 57 in the quest for quick runs.

Norton took five for 54 and Lawson claimed three wickets.
