Gomersal produced a stunning performance to clinch a place in the semi-finals of the Solly Sports Heavy Woollen Cup.

The Bradford League outfit defeated highly-fancied Huddersfield League opponents Delph & Dobcross by 138 runs.

Delph, who had ended Wrenthorpe’s hopes of a fifth successive Heavy Woollen Cup triumph in the opening round, were outplayed.

The platform for victory was set by Ben Platt, who hit a fine 98 as Gomersal made 234. Danny Lloyd was the next highest scorer with 31.

When Delph batted they had no answer to Mohammad Zeb (5-44) and James Russell (5-47) as they were bowled out for just 96.

Gomersal will now play fellow Bradford League Division One side Hanging Heaton, who defeated Division Two outfit Morley by 44 runs.

James Stansfield continued his fine form with the bat by making an unbeaten 79 as Heaton posted 250-7, with Alan Mynett (42) also adding valuable runs.

Morley were unable to keep up with the required rate but 15-year-old opener James McNichol (40) impressed again as his side finished on 206-9.

The shock of the day came at Albert Terrace where in-form Woodlands suffered a three-wicket defeat to Huddersfield League side Shepley.

Woodlands made 222-9 as Sarfraz Ahmed hit 48, skipper Pieter Swanepoel 41 and Simon Mason 40.

But Shepley eased home with three overs to spare as Tom Denton made 75. Swanepoel was the pick of Woodlands’ bowlers with 4-44.

Shepley will now face the winners of the delayed quarter-final between Yeadon and Slaithwaite.

Semi-final draw: Gomersal v Hanging Heaton, Shepley v Yeadon or Slaithwaite. Matches to be played Sunday, July 3.
