Burley will not forget their debut in the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy.

Opponents York smashed their way to a stunning 413-9 in their 50 overs before bowling out the shell-shocked Aire-Wharfe League champions for just 128.

Opener Duncan Snell made 182 and Oliver Hairs 134 as they shared a second-wicket stand of 292 for the Yorkshire League title holders.

Burley had hoped to give the 2009 competition winners a good run for their money but, after Nick Brook briefly raised their hopes with an early wicket, the rest of the match was sheer agony.

Snell smashed nine sixes and 20 fours, while Hairs struck four sixes and 18 fours as the Burley bowlers came in for a savaging.

Burley skipper Mark Harrison admitted: “We were thoroughly outplayed and they were in a different class to us.

“Snell and Hairs were awesome. When we bowled a back-of-a-length ball – normally a good delivery in our cricket – they simply hit it for six.

“It certainly wasn’t fun chasing leather for 50 overs but you have to admire the quality of their cricket.”

Burley attempted to go down with all guns blazing when they batted but Ryan Cooper (47) was the only batsman to get going as Jake Murphy (5-49) and Daniel Woods (3-29) made their mark.

One consolation for Burley is that York’s score is not a competition record. Elsecar made 426-4 against Highbury in 2003.
