Gomersal completed a three-wicket home win over Pudsey St Lawrence in an extraordinary record- breaking match that produced 686 runs in the JCT600 Bradford League yesterday.

It beat the previous league record of 628 set by Yeadon and Pudsey St Lawrence in 2003.

Teenagers, opener Andrew Gorrod and 16-year-old Jack Seddon, were Gomersal’s heroes as they chased down St Lawrence’s formidable total of 342-6 to win with seven balls to spare.

Gorrod laid the foundations of this remarkable victory, making his second league century of the season, striking five sixes and ten fours as he made exactly 100, while No 5 batsman Greg Pickles stepped up the pace with a knock of 75 that included seven sixes and four fours.

Seddon and Ben Platt then launched the final onslaught on the St Lawrence bowlers after Gomersal suffered a mini collapse that saw them lose three wickets for two runs, including Pickles.

At 255-7 with 88 still needed, a Gomersal win looked unlikely, but No 9 batsman Seddon smashed 51 off only 19 balls with six sixes and three fours in an unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 89 in a mere 5.2 overs while Platt hit five sixes and a four in his unbeaten 53.

The result was tough on St Lawrence’s batsman, who must have thought they had done enough to win the match.

Openers Mark Robertshaw, with 109, and Adam Waite (86) put on 160 for the first wicket, and skipper James Smith added 58, but it wasn’t enough to prevent their side losing their fourth match in a row.

Bradford & Bingley increased their lead at the top of Division One to 14 points after a 94-run win over bottom club Baildon at Wagon Lane.

Simon Davies, with 73, and Scott Etherington (42) shared an opening stand of 104 and received good support later in the innings from Sri Lankan Naweed Ghany (57) and Matthew Duce (34 not out) as Bingley totalled 257-6.

Pace bowler James Davies produced the best bowling figures of the season (8-64) as Baildon slumped to 75-9 before skipper Craig Hitchenor and James Midgley put on 88 for the last wicket, with Hitchenor hitting three sixes and 12 fours in an unbeaten 74.

Woodlands moved into third place after their fifth win in a row, beating Manningham Mills by eight wickets.

Left arm spinner Chris Brice took 5-19, including a hat-trick, as Mills were bowled out for 78.

Pace bowlers James Lee and Iain Wardlaw each took 5-28 as Cleckheaton dismissed Hanging Heaton for 56 to set up a six-wicket win.

Defending champions Pudsey Congs beat East Bierley by five wickets.

After restricting Bierley to 164-9, Gareth Phillips made 52 before Barbar Butt (53) and Edward Walmsley (34) guided them to victory with an unbroken sixth- wicket stand of 67.
