The final day of the Central Yorkshire League season saw Batley join Liversedge as Premier Division relegation partners after Ossett found an unexpected escape route in the shape of unpredictable Birstall.

It was always going to be tough for Batley, against a Wakefield Thornes side pushing for a top-four finish, but a top-scoring 37 from Ayeez Seedat helped them to 155-9.

Tariq Hussain (3-56) helped reduce the visitors to 113-7 but hopes of victory were dashed when Joe Cook came in at eight for Thornes and hit an unbeaten 36 that sealed the fate of the Mount Pleasant outfit.

Bottom club Liversedge saved their best until last, beating Wakefield St Michaels, as Simon Kay (4-42) and skipper Simon Purdy (3-54) bowled out the home side for 161.

Liam Booth (40) then helped them to a three-wicket win that could not help avoid the drop but did provide a welcome boost.

With Batley losing, results elsewhere were academic but Ossett made absolutely certain with a six-wicket win over Birstall, Chris Hoseley hitting 70 not out.

And Altofts collected what might have been two vital points when their game with runaway champions Wrenthorpe was washed out.

Wrenthorpe finished 17 points clear of second-placed New Farnley in the top flight.

Mirfield Parish Cavaliers were promoted but were left 27 points adrift of champions Hunslet Nelson after another last-day washout, while Moorlands finished in third position after their clash with fourth-placed Buttershaw St Paul’s also fell victim to the rain.

Scholes, only five points from mid-table security, finished one point behind East Leeds to land the second relegation spot – despite a last-day run romp against their relegation rivals that saw them reach 275-5 off 36 overs, with 125 from Majid Majeed and an unbeaten 66 from Matthew Barnes.

The declaration was to give more time to bowl out the opposition and secure the outright win needed to overhaul the Leeds side but in the end the opposition batted out on 211-8 to ensure their survival.

Wakefield Thornes A and Oulton were promoted from Division Two, while Batley A and Altofts A went up from Division Three.

Westwood Park, the only first team in this lower division finished in a modest mid-table position after their game against Caribbean was yet another washout.
