After the brilliant Yorkshire bowling performance on day one, a frustrating second day means the Tykes now face a real battle to win their vital LV= County Championship match against Nottinghamshire.

This follows the Division One leaders producing a stubborn fightback to reach the close on 357-6 in their second innings.

Although that only gives Notts a slender lead of 152, it is a remarkable recovery from a side who were bowled out for just 59 in their first innings.

Much of the difference can be put down to the Trent Bridge pitch, which was far more placid on day two, but Yorkshire’s bowling was also not as accurate.

After the hosts had finished the Tykes off in only 13 balls early on, captain Andrew Gale finishing on a career-best 151 not out, it was makeshift opener Paul Franks who first set about reducing the 205-run deficit.

Following Bradford-born Moin Ashraf’s dismissal of Alex Hales for 24, Franks put on 131 with Mark Wagh for the second wicket.

Then, after Franks fell to Bradfordian Adil Rashid for a season’s-best 79, Wagh continued the home side’s domination to reach 90 before he also went to the leg-spinner.

At this stage Nottinghamshire had reached 278-3, with a lead of 73 runs, before three late wickets made sure Yorkshire would still be in charge by the close.

Ajmal Shahzad took two of them, removing the dangerous Samit Patel and Ali Brown for four apiece, before Oliver Hannon-Dalby ousted Adam Voges for 72.

Those wickets could yet prove vital in the outcome of this match and Yorkshire’s ambitions of winning the championship.

Notts captain Chris Read (24no) and Darren Pattinson (20no) had put on an unbroken 28 by the close.
