Adam Lyth expressed his delight at becoming the first man in the country to reach 1,000 County Championship runs for the season.

The 22-year-old continued an incredible summer with 84 off 152 balls to help his Yorkshire side to a commanding 325-4 from 96 overs at close on day one against Warwickshire at Headingley.

Lyth was within touching distance at the start of the match, and reached the milestone in the early stages of a second-wicket partnership of 148 in 39 overs with in-form Anthony McGrath.

“I’m over the moon,” said Lyth, who also saw Gerard Brophy finish the day unbeaten on 92 off 153 balls.

“My aim was to get 1,000 by the end of the season but it’s come in July.

“It was nice to get the 18 that I needed, and I managed to get 84. I was disappointed not to get a hundred but I would have taken 84 at the start of the day.”

Lyth, McGrath and Jacques Rudolph are now the LV= Division One’s leading three run scorers, although Rudolph failed to add to his 743 because he fell for a duck in the third over of the match to left-arm seamer Neil Carter (3-63 from 22).

Lyth reached his 50 off 82 balls before lunch and McGrath his half-century off 72 after the break.

Both men were dropped in the slips just before getting out, and their departures came within the space of three overs to take the score from 153-1 to 156-3 early in the afternoon.

McGrath, 34, has now passed 50 ten times in his last 11 innings in the Championship, and his 57 off 102 balls took him beyond the 825 runs he recorded in the whole of last season.

“It was tough,” continued Lyth. “They bowled well. The wicket’s not as flat as the other ones we’ve had here, and it was swinging too. But me and ‘Mags’ put on a good partnership.”

Brophy and Jonny Bairstow (44) then had to be more watchful after the loss of two quick wickets but shared a century partnership for the fifth wicket before Bairstow was trapped lbw by Steffan Piolet.
