Tino Best has revealed that he has become a more rounded cricketer in his time at Yorkshire.

The exuberant West Indies pace bowler says he has been working hard on his fielding with the Headingley coaching staff.

Best, who will almost certainly remain with the county as their overseas player for the rest of the season, will line up against Roses rivals Lancashire in a mouth-watering LV= County Champion-ship match at Old Trafford today.

Best, 28, has taken a couple of spectacular catches over the last couple of weeks in Twenty20.

He explained: “Martyn Moxon and the fielding coaches have really helped me since coming to Yorkshire, and I think it is beginning to show.

“I have really worked hard on my fielding, and I think every bowler needs to be a good fielder as it is such an essential part of the game. There is no point in bowling quick if I can’t then field for the team.”

Best’s desire to do well has been plain for everybody to see.

He runs in like his life depends on it, and has celebrated his catches with copious measures of gusto.

He is a popular figure around Headingley, and the way the more vocal Twenty20 crowds have reacted to him would suggest that his popularity is increasing day by day.

“I just play my cricket hard,” he added. “Hopefully the fans will see that I give it my all. In the future I want them to say ‘Tino Best was a good lad who came and gave it his all. We love him’. That’s how I want to be remembered.”

Should the Bajan bowl his county to the Championship title, he won’t just be popular. He will be given the freedom of Headingley!

But, for that to happen, he needs a big performance at a potentially fast and bouncy Old Trafford this week. If the Roses Twenty20 was anything to go by, he will certainly be up for it.

“It was brilliant to play against Lancashire but also to beat them was awesome. It’s like beating Australia for the West Indies,” he said.

“The atmosphere in the Roses match was absolutely fantastic. As soon as I got out of my car people were saying ‘come on Tino, we've got to beat Lancashire’. To do it again would be amazing.”

Yorkshire, who have played eight matches, are six points ahead of Lancashire, who have only played seven.
