Adam Lyth, Yorkshire’s new 20-over sensation, has called for more hard work and patience from his team-mates tonight when they welcome Friends Provident Twenty20 high-fliers Notting-hamshire to Headingley.

Lyth had cobbled together only one previous score in double figures before his batting pyrotechnics against Worcestershire on Tuesday, when he scored 59 off 24 balls opening up in the absence of Jacques Rudolph – who was missing with a shoulder injury.

And with the South African expected to miss out again, Lyth is likely to face the new ball alongside captain Andrew Gale.

“Notts have got some fantastic players and Dirk Nannes is one of the best bowlers up front,” said the Whitby-born left-hander.

“But hopefully, we can see him off and then cash in against some of the other guys.

“I’d played about ten games [before Tuesday] and averaged about two. But I played well and hope to do the same against Notts and again on Sunday. I just saw the ball well and another half-century or even more would be great.”

Conceding 200 runs in losing their opening two matches did not bode well for the White Rose.

But despite losing Tim Bresnan, Ajmal Shahzad and Australian Clint McKay to international duty, Yorkshire are almost surprised by the strength in depth that has now brought back-to-back wins.

Only their next opponents have managed to link together strong displays consistently.

Notts are the form team domestically this season, the only side above Yorkshire in the Championship, second in their Clydesdale Bank 40 section and with daylight at the top of the North Group in the shortest form – five points clear of Yorkshire.

“We struggled a bit early on with consistency but now we’ve got it right and with a bit of hard work, we hope to pick up another two wins here,” added Lyth, whose side need to quickly switch their focus to Champion-ship cricket in time for the Roses match at Old Trafford on Monday.

Notts will take some stopping with just three defeats in 20 matches this season in all competitions.

Yorkshire also face Leicestershire at Headingley on Sunday. The game will now start at 11am to avoid a clash with England’s last-16 World Cup match, which will be shown on the big screen.
