Yorkshire’s batsmen came up with a record-breaking performance at Headingley tonight, putting Worcestershire to the sword for a 104-run win in the Friends Provident Twenty20.

Adam Lyth – replacing the injured Jacques Rudolph - carved out the joint-third fastest 50 ever in English Twenty20 to lay the platform for Yorkshire’s record score in cricket’s shortest format of 213 for seven.

And boasting just one win all season in any ‘pyjama cricket’, Worcestershire were forced to settle for damage limitation when Steve Patterson struck twice in the second over of the reply.

Opening the innings after Andrew Gale had opted to bat first, Lyth was powerful through the leg-side and precise in his placement when driving through the covers, sharing in a second-wicket partnership of 108 with Herschelle Gibbs that took little more than seven overs to amass.

The left-hander’s knock was ended when he was leg-before to veteran Sanath Jayasuriya but it couldn’t detract from his first impact in 20-over cricket after five ducks in his past eight Twenty20 innings.

The home team suffered a mid-innings wobble but momentum was restored by Jonathan Bairstow’s unbeaten 49, contributing three of the 11 sixes struck by the White Rose county as they eclipsed a six-year record for their highest total with a boundary off the final ball.

Worcestershire have the unwanted tag of worst Twenty20 side in the country, their 36th loss in the seven-year history of the competition being virtually guaranteed when Patterson had Yorkshire old boy Phil Jaques caught behind with his first ball and in-form Moeen Ali holed out later in the same over.

Aided by some scintillating fielding, both Azeem Rafiq and Rich Pyrah chipped in with three wickets as the Royals were skittled for just 109 with more than three overs unused.
