Rain arrived just before tea-time to ruin yesterday's JCT600 Bradford League Division One programme.

But it couldn’t disguise the performance of the day from Bradford & Bingley’s overseas player Naveed Gharni.

The Sri Lankan teenager hit a stunning unbeaten 149 at Bankfoot, striking nine sixes and 17 fours.

The 19-year-old also shared in a second-wicket stand of 220 with opener Scott Etherington (80) as Bradford & Bingley made 259 for three before declaring after 42 overs as the rain started.

Gharni batted beautifully. He gave only one chance and that came on 143 when veteran Murphy Walwyn stepped over the boundary catching a straight drive off the bowling of Greg Colehan.

Etherington gave good support to Gharni and struck two sixes and 14 fours as the Bankfoot bowling attack was put to the sword.

The rain not only deprived Gharni of a deserved 150 but also denied Bradford & Bingley the opportunity to press for victory against the bottom team.

Another century-maker was Farsley opener Steve Simpson against Cleckheaton.

His innings of 105 contained six sixes and ten fours and helped Farsley to 233 for six in 47 overs before play was abandoned. Lorenzo Inghram was 62 not out.

The team who were happiest to see the rain were Undercliffe.

They had no game and remain at the top of the table – just one point ahead of Pudsey Congs, who earned seven points at Baildon.

Congs made 228 for five in 43 overs, with Adam Patel (56no), Andrew Siddall (45), Andrew Bairstow (42) and Babar Butt (42) all making runs while skipper Ian Philliskirk was Baildon’s best bowler with three for 69.

There was no doubt which team was most relieved to see the rain – Saltaire.

They were in deep trouble at 105 for nine against Yeadon after Paul Machell (4-17) sparked a collapse with a hat-trick.

Javed Umarji (37) was the only Saltaire batsman to make an impression in the relegation battle. Pudsey St Lawrence saw their chance of going back the top washed out at Tofts Road.

Rivals Woodlands had struggled to 135 for four after 41 overs when the heavens opened.

* No Division One second-team games finished either but Bradford & Bingley notched up the highest score.

They were 219 for six after 42.4 overs against Hanging Heaton.

Michael Clarke (74) and Andrew Clarke (50) made half-centuries while Adam Swallow hit a brisk 37.
