Herschelle Gibbs says Yorkshire have got to nail their basics if they are to challenge in the Friends Provident Twenty20.

The explosive South African starred as his side claimed their first win in the North Division at the third attempt against Durham at Headingley on Thursday, scoring 76 off 39 balls in the nine-wicket win.

A record stand for Yorkshire in Twenty20 between himself and Andrew Gale – 137 in 11.5 overs – made Durham’s 156 for seven look a paltry one.

Ahead of Sunday’s home match with Northamptonshire, Gibbs said: “As long as we keep doing the basics, building pressure with the ball, I think we’ve got the batters to go well in this.

“It was a really good performance all round, it was a lot better than the first two games.”

Despite missing the defeat at Worcestershire last Friday with a stiff neck, Gibbs can be pleased with the start to his spell as the county’s 20-over overseas player.

Having scored 36 off 28 in the defeat against Derbyshire, he returned to hit four sixes to help confirm his sixth highest score in Twenty20.

“It’s always nice to get runs and spend time in the middle,” continued the 36-year-old, who has played 87 matches in this format.

“I’ll take the runs whenever I score them, but hopefully there’s plenty more to come because we still have 14 games left.”

Gibbs said he was particularly impressed with Adil Rashid’s spell.

The Bradford leg-spinner returned three for 23 as the White Rose bowlers finally found their range after conceding 222 and 208 in their first two matches.

“Rashid bowled unbelievably well,” added Gibbs. “The more and more I see of him, the more I think he’s a huge talent.”

Clint McKay will play the last game of his first spell with the county against Northants before linking up with the Australia one-day international squad.

He is expected to return for the last five group fixtures. Tino Best is likely to cover.
