Yorkshire lost both openers during the afternoon session on the opening day of their County Championship match against Durham at Headingley.

But the Tykes still advanced to a stirring 214 for two from 69 overs at tea, with Anthony McGrath and Jacques Rudolph at the crease in the midst of an ongoing third-wicket partnership.

Adam Lyth and Joe Sayers shared 146 runs inside 39 overs for the first wicket but the former player was the first to go when caught at first slip by Michael Di Venuto off the bowling of left-arm spinner Ian Blackwell for 85 off 125 balls.

It was the third time in three matches that Lyth, who has made an impressive start to his new role at the top of the order, had fallen for 84 or more without reaching a hundred.

But he did hit 15 boundaries and an all-run four in an entertaining and eye-catching knock.

Sayers fell eight overs later, in the 47th, when he was caught at short leg off Blackwell for 63 off 139 balls.

McGrath was unbeaten on 26 and Rudolph 31 at the interval.
