Martyn Moxon has called for calm from his Yorkshire players after their striking start to the County Championship season was consolidated at Kent over the weekend.

The Tykes’ director of professional cricket could have been looking at three successive wins had an unlikely final-day chase of 392 not fallen short at Canterbury.

But Yorkshire still sit top of LV= Division One after gaining eight points from a draw – and expectations are starting to increase.

Their unbeaten start to the new season, which also includes a spectacular ten-wicket Clydesdale Bank 40 win against Essex on Sunday, will be fully tested over four days against county champions Durham at Headingley, starting tomorrow.

Moxon said: “I’m very pleased with the way we have gone about our cricket. There is an air of confidence about the lads at the moment.

“There are 13 matches to go and we’re certainly not getting carried away. But we’ve tried to start building a team that can play for a period of time. We want to bring success to the county for a sustained period and not be a one-hit wonder.”

Despite the home side dictating terms for much of the contest at Canterbury, Yorkshire’s batting in the fourth innings was again a massive plus point as they had a dart at victory.

“I still don’t believe we are the finished article but I’ve been delighted with the way we have played in the first three games,” said Moxon, who now has to do without England duo Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad.

“We haven’t had it all our way, and we have been under the cosh at times, but we’ve always fought back well. That bodes well for the future.”
