It was heartening to learn that four Yorkshire youngsters will be involved over the forthcoming week in the ECB’s National Cricket Performance Centre pace and spin events.
There are two coaching clinics at Loughborough to help the country’s most promising bowlers develop their game under the guidance of a whole host of top coaches, including Yorkshire bowling coach Steve Oldham.
Quick bowler James Lee, 19, will be in the east midlands until Wednesday, while 22-year-old leg-spinner Mark Lawson will attend from Wednesday to Friday.
Batsmen are also required to attend, so Joe Sayers and Christopher Allinson, an 18-year-old left-hander from Guisborough, will take part all week.
The spin event has been running for the previous two years but this is the first year of the pace event.
An ECB spokesman explained: “Players will tackle a series of match-based scenarios under elite match conditions.”
Graham Thorpe, Mike Gatting, Phil DeFreitas, Mike Hendrick, Dave Houghton, Jack Birkenshaw, Bruce French, John Childs, Andy Pick and Kevin Shine are the other coaches involved.
