Lancashire captain Stuart Law described a visit to play Yorkshire in a Twenty20 Cup tie at Headingley as the cricketing equivalent of a European football trip to Galatasaray.

The tough-talking Australian captain was referring to the difficulty of fielding in front of the boisterous Western Terrace when they were throwing things like scotch eggs, empty beer cups and flip-flops at the opposition fielders.

Well tonight it was not the Headingley crowd of 8,749 who made his life hell, but Tykes captain Darren Gough, who biffed 20 from nine balls to help chase down 151 with two balls to spare.

The White Rose county just managed to chase down Lancashire's par score of 150 for six with two wickets in hand in gloomy conditions.

Gough entered the fray at the end of the 17th over, with Yorkshire needing an unlikely 30 runs from the final three overs.

And the 37-year-old former England man bashed his international colleague Dominic Cork for three boundaries in an 18th over that went for 17 runs to turn the tie on its head.

The captain shared in an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 33 with all-rounder Adil Rashid, who finished on just five not out.

While Gough will take all the plaudits for a batting display that rolled back the years to the time when he was classed as a genuine all-rounder for his country, Anthony McGrath set up the win.

'Mags', who is Gough's vice-captain, top-scored for the fifth 20-over match in succession with a brilliant 46 off 39 balls, including six boundaries.

He had notched two consecutive half-centuries in the wins at Derbyshire and Leicestershire. He had also hit 30s in the two opening defeats.

But he was one of two wickets to fall to Lancashire's pace demon Sajid Mahmood in the 17th over, while Rich Pyrah was the other.

Mahmood, who famously destroyed Pakistan in a Test match on this ground and impressed here in the County Championship draw, finished with figures of two for 13 from his four overs.

Yorkshire had been in cruise control at 86 for three in the 12th over until Lancashire's South African Kolpak all-rounder Francois Du Plessis removed Jacques Rudolph and Chris Taylor in the space of three balls.

Earlier, Mal Loye top scored with a brisk 43 off 33 balls at the top of the order and Gareth Cross bashed a late unbeaten 42 from 24 balls, including six fours and one huge maximum into the Western Terrace.

Pyrah, who took two catches, also claimed an impressive three for 20 from his four overs.

The pair meet again on Friday at Old Trafford. Yorkshire are above Lancs - and third in the North Division.
