YORKSHIRE’S new ball pair Ryan Sidebottom and Jack Brooks stunned Warwickshire during a spectacular afternoon’s bowling on day two at Edgbaston today as the champions took charge of their latest LV= County Championship match.

Sidebottom and Brooks treated onlookers to an exhibition of pace bowling in swinging conditions as, in reply to 213, the home side were bowled out for just 69 in their first innings.

They lost eight wickets during a helter-skelter afternoon session of the second day, slipping from 18-2 and only just avoiding the follow-on.

Still, that was mere consolation for Warwickshire given that Yorkshire convincingly added to their lead of 144 from late afternoon onwards, closing on 125-1 from 42 second-innings overs.

There were 28 overs lost to morning and evening rain, and Yorkshire will begin day three with a commanding lead of 269.

Will Rhodes reached his maiden Championship fifty by closing on 53 not out and shared half-century stands for the first and second wickets with Alex Lees and Jack Leaning, 28 not out.

Sidebottom took four wickets yesterday afternoon to finish with 6-34 from 12 overs, while Brooks struck three times to finish with 3-14 from 11. Steve Patterson was the other wicket-taker.

There was a remarkable 30-ball spell when Warwickshire lost five wickets without scoring a run as they slipped from 35-3 in the 13th over to 35-8 in the 18th, with Sidebottom getting three of them and Brooks two.

Although there was some poor stroke play from the hosts, the vast majority of the credit should go to the visitors.

Sidebottom, who bowled Varun Chopra and trapped Chris Wright lbw late on day one, bowled Ian Westwood, offering no shot, and Laurie Evans, had Sam Hain caught at third slip and trapped Pete McKay lbw.

Brooks had Jonathan Trott brilliantly caught by a diving Leaning to his left at third slip, Jeetan Patel caught behind and Boyd Rankin caught at first slip.

Meanwhile, England bowler Liam Plunkett is due to return from three weeks out with a thigh injury in Yorkshire second XI cricket on Thursday.
