Gary Jones today delivered a chilling warning to the rest of League Two: This team is really starting to click.

Saturday’s 2-0 win at Oxford was City’s third in a week to move them level on points with two of the automatic promotion spots.

And Captain Marvel Jones reckons nobody should be surprised that the squad painstakingly assembled by Phil Parkinson is already up among the front-runners.

Both goals came from Jones corners as the Bantams broke their winning duck away from home. And the midfielder expects plenty more to come.

Jones said: “We’ve got very good players here and we work so hard for each other. That combination is frightening.

“We’ve seen in the last few weeks that we’re in great shape. Look at how well organised we are.

“Every team goes through a dodgy spell and we had that blip at Rotherham but I think we’ve bounced back brilliantly.

“We know how strong this squad is and you can call on players to come in and do a job. Saturday showed that because professionally, energy-wise and tactics – we got it all spot on.

“To have two really good home wins and then this one capped off a brilliant week.”

Parkinson had maintained that City’s early form away from Valley Parade was no concern. But after inflicting Oxford’s fifth straight defeat, Jones was delighted to get off the mark.

He added: “It was a relief to get that monkey off your back. I was at Rochdale last year and we hardly won away once.

“I know too well what it’s like to come away and get beaten. It gets in your head and you get in a habit of losing and thinking ‘here we go again’.

“But that can also work the other way. You start to win and then believe you can do that every week.

“Winning those two home games took a massive amount of pressure off coming away. That gave us a massive lift and I thought we were fantastic again.”

Andrew Davies and Nahki Wells converted the second-half set-pieces to lift City onto 16 points – the same as second-placed Port Vale, who visit Valley Parade on Saturday.

But City first face a Capital One Cup third-round home clash with Burton tomorrow and Parkinson will make changes. Ricky Ravenhill and Ritchie Jones could see their first action of the season.

Parkinson said: “It won’t be a case of weakening the team but strengthening it. There are a lot of tired legs in there.

“We’ve had a really tough game against Morecambe and now this one. We’ve got to pick a team who are ready to go and anyone we feel is not up to it won’t play.

“It’s a really big game for the club with the finances involved if we can get through.

“But you look at the players who were not out there. You list all the bench, plus Ritchie Jones who didn’t even make that, and they are all good enough to play.”

* City's League Two rivals Wycombe have sacked manager Gary Waddock.

The Chairboys’ 1-0 home defeat to fellow strugglers AFC Wimbledon, who themselves parted company with manager Terry Brown last week, leaves them 21st in the table, with just four points from seven matches.
