Mark Lawn is confident that City will sign at least one more striker – and possibly two – before the new season kicks off in August.

The Bantams’ joint-chairman has been left delighted by the acquisition of defensive duo Andrew Davies and Rory McArdle.

But he expects more new faces to arrive during the summer and has not ruled out the prospect of Andy Gray returning to Valley Parade.

Initial talks have taken place with the much-travelled hitman and Lawn told the T&A: “If you get a massive team coming in for Andy then he would probably go there.

“But he’s certainly mulling over our offer and we’ll have to wait and see. It’s down to Andy Gray but it would be a massive boost if we could get a proven goalscorer to add to what we’ve got.

“That’s not knocking James Hanson and Nahki Wells, because they did exceptionally well last season.

“We need to get between 30 and 40 goals from our strikers and if we do that then we can think about challenging for automatic promotion.”

The latest frontman City have been linked with is Craig Westcarr of League Two rivals Chesterfield.

The 27-year-old striker or winger joined the Spireites last season for around £80,000 from Notts County.

He went on to bag 11 goals for his new club, the most notable being the last-minute clincher in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final against Swindon at Wembley.

Lawn added that Phil Parkinson is eyeing several targets as City look to build a squad capable of mounting a serious promotion push.

He said: “Phil’s looking at strengthening further with probably a couple of midfielders and at least one striker maybe two. I think that could be a realistic option.”

And he said that out-of-contract trio David Syers, Luke Oliver and Simon Ramsden were all still considering offers to remain at the club.

“We’ve made them their offers and are just waiting to hear from them now,” said Lawn.

Meanwhile, the draw for the newly-named Capital One Cup will be made today.
