Reigning champions Bradford Veterans are returning to Germany this weekend to defend their Hammer SpVg European title.

Burnley and Hertha Berlin are the latest clubs to join a competition that has involved the likes of Leeds, Charlton, Watford and European sides Borussia Dortmund, Wisla Krakow and Dinamo Minsk since it first began in 1978.

City made their debut in 1985 and a team has taken part every year since in Bradford’s twin town of Hamm. They first lifted the trophy in 1988.

Lee Clapham’s team held their nerve last year to beat Germans VFB Sperber Neukoln 7-6 in a penalty shoot-out after the match had finished goalless.

It was sweet revenge for a defeat against the same opponents in the previous final.

But City’s bid for a hat-trick of final appearances could face stiff competition from new boys Burnley. The veteran Clarets squad is set to include John Francis, Roger Eli, John Mullin, Chris Brass and Junior Bent.
