Baildon, who have been basking in the glory of their Twickenham triumph all week, get back to the serious business of playing rugby on Sunday.

They are at Hemsworth in the semi-finals of the Yorkshire Silver Trophy, knowing that the competition winners will go forward to the group stages of the RFU Junior Vase for next season.

If the Jenny Laners triumph this weekend and in the final against Thornensians at Pontefract RUFC (2.00) on Sunday, May 19, they will be only four matches away from a return to England’s rugby headquarters.

Baildon’s rugby chairman Andy Whitley said: “We have had a fantastic week and have had messages of congratulation from club members, both electronically, and in the post from all over, and from other local clubs.

“We would love to get back to Twickenham next season and, although we have nothing in writing from the RFU, I have had assurances that the winners of the Yorkshire Silver Trophy will go into next season’s group stages of the RFU Junior Vase.”

Last weekend’s 6-3 triumph over Harrow came at a cost, however.

Whitley said: “Nicky Lister (fly half) and Dale Tabiner (hooker) are both out with ankle injuries, and Richard Kingham (winger) has not recovered from a ‘dead leg’ and Joe Moore (centre) is out with a shoulder injury and Andy Pollard (forward) is out with a knee injury.”.

“But Jarrod Huss (full back), who will have a late fitness test, should recover from a swollen hand – he had an X-ray in midweek and there is no break – and Tom Craven (hooker) is back in the squad after breaking a hand two months ago and missing out on Twickenham.”

Competition rules mean that Baildon, who were third in Yorkshire Division Three, can only name 19 players for Sunday instead of the 22 who figured against Harrow.

Hemsworth, who were runners-up in SSE Yorkshire Division Four, will be playing in Baildon’s division next season.

Whitley added: “Moxon Fields is a definite change of scenery from Twickenham and we are expecting a tough game as Hemsworth will undoubtedly fancy their chances after a good season.”
