Shaun Ainscough believes he proved a point in Friday’s derby victory over Leeds and says the result proved the Bulls can beat any side in Super League.

Ainscough, 22, came in from the cold to make his first appearance of the season and made his mark with a typically tenacious display on the left wing.

The 12-4 success over the Super League and World Club champions has poured confidence into Mick Potter’s side ahead of today’s trip to bottom side Widnes.

Few players impressed against the Rhinos more than Ainscough, who has been forced to wait patiently until round ten for his first slice of Super League action this season.

“It was great to get back in and I think I had a point to prove,” said Ainscough.

“I hadn’t played in the first team for so long, so I had to do well, and what a game to come back in for.

“It’s been a long time coming, but I’ve been training hard and was ready to take my chance against Leeds. I think I went well and did my bit for the team.”

Ainscough, an impressive performer for the Under-20s in recent weeks, was handed his chance after Jason Crookes was ruled out for three months following shoulder surgery.

The popular Wiganer looked destined to cap his fine display against the Rhinos with a try in the closing stages when he raced to support Danny Addy inside the left channel.

The move failed to materialise, though, and Ainscough added: “I would have loved to have got that try but I think Danny Addy thought I was shouting for the ball.

“I wasn’t, I was actually cheering him on and telling him to score!

“But if we play like that every week we will give any team a run for their money.

“I’m confident we will do well this year.”

On Saturday, the Bulls extended their pledge deadline until midnight tonight as they bid to raise the money they need to stay alive.

Ainscough added: “We’ve been together trying to raise money and it has bonded us together.

“We’ve done well so far but we’re just doing what we can and leaving the financial side of things to the club.

“We’re not too concerned about it, we’re focused on getting the wins and playing well.

“This year just seems different at the club.

“I don’t know what it is, there’s just a real buzz around the place.”

Ainscough is relishing facing Widnes, where he previously played on loan, but the Bulls are down to the bare bones.

Phil Joseph and Karl Pryce joined the injured list after picking up knocks against Leeds but Tom Olbison is set to feature.
