Bulls duo Elliot Kear and Olivier Elima are facing a race to be fit for the start of the season.

New recruit Kear is to undergo a double hernia operation on Tuesday and second-rower Elima is nursing a knee problem.

Kear’s operation is procedural and the Wales winger is expected to be out of action for between four and six weeks.

France skipper Elima requires a knee clear-out and has seen a specialist over the complaint.

The setback has left the pair facing a fight to return to full fitness in time for the Super League opener at home to Catalan Dragons on February 5.

Bulls boss Mick Potter said: “Elliot will have a double hernia operation on Tuesday.

“It’s been coming for a while. He was carrying it during the Four Nations and it’s come to a head. He needs to have it done.

“It’s not an unusual problem but he probably won’t be involved in any of the trial games, other than maybe the last one at the end of January.

“It all depends on his recovery and how quick it goes. Some people can get back within a month and others are closer to six weeks.

“Hernias are funny ones because of the muscles all around the groin area that are involved. Hopefully he will be available again as soon as possible.”

On Elima’s potential return date, Potter added: “Olivier is in need of a clear-out around the knee and it all depends on what the specialist comes back to us with.

“Rugby league players are pretty tough people and will often play through injury, but this needs sorting out.

“However, we have other options there too and the squad is stronger this time around.”
