Valley Parade may have been shrouded in fog but Wayne Jacobs can still remember the game as clear as day 16 years later.

Jacobs scored both goals for City – one with a spectacular overhead kick – as they beat Preston 2-1 in an FA Cup tie shown live on TV.

That December night in 1995 was the only occasion that the loyal left back netted two.

And it was also the last time that the Bantams triumphed in the second round.

In the seven seasons since they dropped back down to the third tier in 2004 and had to start the competition from the beginning again, City have never made it further than this.

No wonder that Preston game still gets brought up by fans.

Jacobs, who will be summarising on the radio tomorrow, has his own DVD which was presented at his testimonial. He can recite the commentary for the second goal word for word.

He said: “It was a real ‘pea souper’ and was touch and go whether the game would go ahead. But with Sky there, they were desperate for it to be on.

“Kammy (Chris Kamara) was in charge for the first time and Lennie Lawrence, who’d just lost his job, was the co-commentator. That was a bit weird.

“I scored in the first half after Paul Showler, who Lennie really liked, cut it back from the byline. I ran in on the angle of the box and shot across goal into the opposite corner.

“The second was the special one. I’d made my way forward and saw big Stix (Ian Ormondroyd) and their keeper going for a high ball.

“I couldn’t see the keeper getting it clear and waited for it to drop. I had my back to goal and met it sweetly with an overhead kick that flew in!

“Lennie got really excited on the commentary and was shouting ‘like a genie out of the box up pops Wayne Jacobs!’ It was a goal I’ll never forget.”

The following year, Jacobs was in the City side that stunned Everton at Goodison with Chris Waddle’s unforgettable 30-yard chip on the way to the last 16 – the club’s last great FA Cup memory. Jacobs added: “You still speak to people about that and it was an absolute wonder goal. But the real hero for us was Mark Schwarzer in goal.

“They had Duncan Ferguson up front but Mark came for everything and we did our best to try and protect him.”

City have not threatened a repeat since. FA Cup pickings have proved as thin as in the league as they slip down the divisions.

Jacobs would love to see Phil Parkinson finally stop the rot and offer the chance of a modern-day glamour tie to excite the players and fans again.

He said: “It’s been too long a wait and it would be great to have everyone anticipating the draw again when the big boys come in. No disrespect to Wimbledon, but it’s a good chance to go through.

“And I think it helps that they’ve won here already this season. That means we aren’t automatic favourites which can bring its own pressure.

“It’s all to play for and I’d take another 2-1 win just like that Preston game.

“And another overhead kick from the fullback would do nicely!”
