Steve Parkin today began work as Phil Parkinson's new number two at Valley Parade.

The 45-year-old former Rochdale, Barnsley and Mansfield boss has filled the vacancy which was left by Colin Cooper's sudden return to Middlesbrough.

Parkin was first-team coach with Hull for three years before a five-month stint in the same role at Scunthorpe until March.

Parkinson said: "There have been several people in my mind to bring in but I really feel we have got the best man for the job.

"It's like signing a player. You have to get the right one in who will complement the staff we've already got in place.

"Steve is desperate to get back in and everyone in football knows about his honesty and work ethic. That's so important."

Wayne Allison, who had been filling in as assistant, will revert back to his coaching role with the development squad.
