Kyle Briggs intends to use tomorrow’s final game at Wakefield to put down a marker for next season.

The Bulls’ winter signing from Featherstone was sidelined in mid-June with a broken wrist, sustained three games into a loan spell at Harlequins, but returned last Sunday with a fine display in the 48-24 victory over Crusaders.

But Briggs, still only 23, admits that, while he was out injured, the news that coach Mick Potter had acquired two more half-backs – Luke Gale and Jarrod Sammut – for 2012 came as a body blow.

“It was a bit alarming at first,” he said. “It adds a little bit more pressure because of the extra competition but I met with Mick and asked to just be given a chance to prove that I deserve my shirt and not to go giving out numbers just because we have signed two good new players.

“I was pleased to be playing again on Sunday and the wrist is fine.

“It was a good team performance – we stuck to our systems and played well and that made my comeback easier.

“We’ve all got plenty to play for at Wakefield as a lot of players are playing for their shirts next year.”

Briggs, midway through a two-year contract at Odsal, was a prolific scorer at Featherstone, where he scored 32 tries and 124 goals in 43 appearances.

But a couple of injuries, including the wrist, have limited his outings this year to just seven matches, of which the Bulls have won three and pushed Leeds and Wigan close in two of the others.

“I seem to have been fortunate to have played in many of the games where we have played quite well,” said the goal-kicking stand-off.

Briggs is likely to keep his place alongside Ben Jeffries, who has had two spells at Wakefield, when the Bulls finish their campaign at the Rapid Solutions Stadium.

Coach Mick Potter is also able to welcome back back-rower Tom Olbison, out with a damaged ankle since the 14-14 draw with St Helens in June, while winger Gareth Raynor has recovered from the toe injury that forced him to sit out the Crusaders game.

Olbison is set to replace Ian Sibbit, who is ruled out after damaging wrist ligaments.
