Dane Bairstow expressed his delight at winning the Bradford Union Amateur Strokeplay title – and was even more thrilled for his parents Trevor and Stephanie.

The 22-year-old shot a second-round three-under-par 66 at West Bradford as Bingley St Ives claimed three of the top four spots.

He pipped clubmate Will Whiteoak by one shot – a last-roll birdie at the final hole proving crucial – while fellow Bingley player Andy Town came fourth behind Hollins Hall’s Oliver Young.

Bairstow, who came through the junior ranks at West Bradford, said: “I am absolutely made up to win this and absolutely ecstatic for my mum and dad.

“They have taken me too and fro to tournaments and to win something like this for them is brilliant. My mum was crying after I’d won.”

The Bradford Union player became the first St Ives member to win the trophy since Whitney Hopkinson in 1989 – the year Bairstow was born.

Having shot an opening-round 73 – a triple bogey at the 11th severely hampering him – the Lidget Green-based ace had some catching up to do in the afternoon.

And despite the good weather, tough pin positions – Bairstow said they were the probably the hardest he had known on the course – meant a charge up the leaderboard would not be easy.

A birdie at the third got him going and more were added at the 12th and 13th. A blemish-free round looked on the cards until the 16th.

Bairstow said: “I made the cardinal sin of saying I’d never had a bogey-free round at West Bradford and then put the ball in a bush I didn’t even know existed.

“I could have easily made six or seven but ended up with a great bogey five. At the time I didn’t think it mattered but it turned out to be massive.”

Bairstow scrambled a par at the next before delivering the killer-blow birdie at the last with a ten-foot putt that just crept in.
