Mick Potter has backed Shad Royston to handle the heat of a Bulls and Rhinos derby – if Brett Kearney fails to make it.

The Aussie utility back was not named in the initial 19-man squad for Headingley tomorrow night, despite scoring two tries after starting in the loss to Hull.

Royston’s place has been taken by fit-again prop Bryn Hargreaves, who is back in contention after three games on the sidelines.

But there is still a doubt over Kearney, who faces a test on his injured knee today. And while the Bulls are hopeful he will play, Potter would have no problem drafting in Royston to deputise at full back.

The 28-year-old, signed from Halifax last winter, is the club’s top try-scorer with ten and Potter has been impressed at how well he has made the transition to the full-time game.

The Bulls coach said: “Shad’s a good player and he’s proven he can play Super League. He adds value to our squad and I’m pleased with the way he’s going.”
