Eccleshill United 2 Glasshoughton Welfare 1

The only local side to definitely book their place in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup over the weekend was Eccleshill United, who came from a goal down to overcome NCE Premier Division rivals Glasshoughton.

The visitors snatched the lead with the only goal of the first half, netted by Adam Westcar in the 28th minute, but United responded with two strikes in the space of eight second-half minutes.

It could be claimed as a masterstroke by United manager Steve Watson, who brought Scott Broughton off the bench just before the break.

Broughton equalised in the 51st minute following a great move and minutes later he broke through to also score the second.

That proved to be the winner and earned Eccleshill a £1,000 pay day and a home tie in the next round against either Hebburn or Flixton.

Watson dismissed the substitution as a flash of inspiration, claiming that Mark Burham, who made way, was struggling with an injury.

Watson did concede that his side had turned in a generally poor display before the interval.

"We played some good stuff in the first half but were slightly below par, although the conditions didn't help because we couldn't play our natural game," he said.

"Me and Ray (Price, assistant manager) had to say things we didn't want to have to say at half-time but after asking the players to show the standards they have set themselves, they responded really well.

"We started to see things in the second half that suggested we were getting back to the right ways. The players were beginning to show what they are made of and it proved to be the difference.

"Glasshoughton are a stubborn side, tough to break down and beat, and we don't want to take anything away from their performance. But at the end of the day we have won some serious money for this club and maintained good habits."
