Host professional Brian Rumney was impressed with the high standard of play as a stunning 66 saw Kevin Harper clinch the Europro Tour event at Hollins Hall.

Harper, from East Devon, came through the field on the final day to win the PrimeTime Recruitment Championship by one shot after finishing on 11 under par.

Rumney, who finished in the prize-money himself after coming joint 18th with a three-under-par score, said: "The scoring was fabulous, especially considering the days weren't nice weatherwise.

"The cut was at one under par, which means 50 guys have shot under par. That isn't easy to do round Hollins in windy conditions - and for the winner to shoot 11 under means he has played some fantastic golf."

The best rounds of the competition came from Matthew McGuire and John Wells, who both shot seven-under 64s on the second day.

Harper was only one shot in front of Rumney after the second round on six under par but he surged to the top of the leaderboard after driving the 14th viaduct hole to claim an eagle and followed that with two more birdies to pip Warren Bennett to the £10,000 first prize.

Rumney, who has been pro at Hollins Hall since June last year, would have finished higher up the leaderboard but for two dropped shots in the final four holes.

That saw him end with a 73 after earlier rounds of 68 and 69 had put him in contention.

Rumney had a special word of praise for Hollins amateur member James Sibbles, who was playing in his first professional event.

The 23-year-old was just two off the lead after an opening round of 68 and was five under par after 34 holes before a bad finish down eight and nine saw drop back to two under.

That still saw him make the cut and, although he slipped down the field with a closing 78, Rumney, who teaches Sibbles, said: "He did really well.

"He was playing for pride and experience and he can certainly take a lot of pride out of that performance."

The amateur's exploits have earned him an invite to the next Europro Tour event at Towcester.

Also in the prizemoney were former Bradford Open winner Darryl Berry, who finished on level par (70, 68, 75), and home player Andy Town, who carded a four-over-par score (72, 69, 76).

But clubmate Terry Brushwood, also a member at Northcliffe along with Town, and Bingley St Ives player Richard Wheatley failed to make the cut.

The Europro Tour is regarded as the leading developmental tour to prepare players for the step up to the Challenge Tour and ultimately to the main European Tour.
